Speak Up Groups

Speak Up Groups

At Cornwall People First we help each other to speak up and to connect with the community.

Cornwall People First has speak up groups in locations across Cornwall. At speak up groups, people with learning disabilities speak up about things that are important to them.

We also have fun, meet old and new friends, share information, learn new skills, and meet visitors like police officers or liaison nurses.

We sometimes visit places in the community like the local fire station or library.

If you have a learning disability and would like to get involved, just come along!

We talk about lots of different things, including:

  • Where we live
  • Healthy Relationships
  • Eating Well and Staying Healthy
  • Our Goals and Dreams
  • Keeping Safe
  • What Makes Good Support
  • Self Advocacy
  • What Makes Us Happy

We are a user lead organisation, so forum members choose the forum topics and take the lead in the conversations we have.

The issues and experiences raised at Speak Up Groups can be reported to Cornwall’s Learning Disability Partnership Board so that things can be improved and changed.

Our volunteer self-advocates help us to do this at the Partnership Board meetings.

We currently facilitate Speak Up Groups in:

  • Redruth
  • Kehelland
  • Helston
  • Penzance
  • Newquay
  • Truro
  • St Austell

Contact us to find out about a group near you.

Speak Up Group details will be put on the website, so please check for meetings in your area. If you would like to receive invitations in the post, let us know and we will send you a membership form, and add your contact details to our database.
